- The humpback whale has been lying in shallow water off Wismar for about a week, while an expert team and divers checked its position again.
- Experts assess the animal as sick and injured, with severe skin problems linked to the Baltic’s low salinity and injuries possibly caused by a ship’s propeller and probably a net.
- A catamaran rescue previously under consideration was abandoned because the whale’s condition does not permit transport and lifting it could cause fatal stress and further skin tears.
- Euthanasia was ruled out, and experts say the whale will probably die in the shallow water within the coming days or weeks because it needs another 60 centimeters of water to free itself.
We have tested all possible actions and came to the conclusion: The animal is not transportable and could even die suddenly from the high stress and the already severely burdened skin.— Expert Stephanie Groß, marine biologist, explains
