- Klobuchar said she noticed the confusion when Smith mentioned the Iowa Hawkeyes rather than the Atlanta Hawks.
- Schmitt argued Smith had attended an Atlanta Hawks game on February 3, 2024, presenting text messages as evidence.
- Smith initially appeared confused, then recalled attending Iowa’s women’s basketball game against Maryland in Maryland.
- Klobuchar said the hearing was intended to distract from current issues, including the affordability crisis and Trump’s war with Iran.
I think it does show two things: One, don’t ask a question unless you know the answer, and when a prosecutor tells you that that never happened, maybe you should start doubting your chart. The second thing is the whole reason they did this hearing was to distract from what is going on right now.— Amy Klobuchar, in an interview with The Independent about the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing and the surrounding scrutiny of Schmitt/Smith.

- At a September 29 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Darline Graham clashed with Jack Smith over subpoenaed phone records.
- Smith said Lindsey Graham was not a target, but likely would have testified and found Trump’s claims false.
- The subpoena covered records from Republican lawmakers and groups, not call content; Cruz cited about 20 percent of Senate Republicans.
- Smith said secrecy reflected concerns that Trump and his allies might destroy evidence or intimidate witnesses.
"Do you know what I think? I just think you were trying to bully my brother and other allies of President Trump. You caused my brother and a lot of other senators a lot of stress, and that makes me sick," she claimed. "You should be ashamed of yourself."— Sen. Darline Graham during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Sept. 29, 2026
