- The station has operated for more than 20 years, led by Monika Thomas with volunteers in Elberfeld.
- Each year, it admits around 400 to 500 hedgehogs; about two-thirds are subsequently released into the wild.
- According to Thomas, the office requires a Section 11 Animal Welfare Act competency certificate, veterinary visits three times weekly, and two substitutes.
- The nonprofit association relies exclusively on donations, sponsorships, and volunteer work for its funding.
We take in about 400-500 hedgehogs every year. About two-thirds of them make it.— Monika Thomas, founder and head of the Wuppertal Hedgehog Station, describing the station’s intake and success rate.
