- Researchers at Jawaharlal Nehru University detected elevated levels of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus bacteria in Delhi’s winter air exceeding WHO safety limits.
- Seventy-three percent of these bacteria showed resistance to multiple antibiotic types, with many carrying the mecA gene linked to methicillin resistance.
- Winter weather conditions such as poor air circulation and low humidity help these superbugs survive and spread through the atmosphere.
- The study highlights the need for regular environmental surveillance and stronger policies targeting pollution, antibiotic misuse, and resistance control.
This study emphasises the potential health risks posed by airborne reservoirs of antibiotic resistance in urban environments.— The researchers from Jawaharlal Nehru University underscore the urgency of coordinated action.
