Dow to Close Major Chemical Plants by 2027Two key plants in Schkopau and Böhlen will cease operations by end of 2027, cutting workforce by one-third to under 1,000 employees.
- Dow will shut down two large chemical facilities in Schkopau and Böhlen by the end of 2027.
- The closures involve Chlor-alkali, vinyl, and cracker units producing essential chemicals like ethylene and propylene.
- About 550 out of 1,500 employees in Central Germany will lose their jobs as part of the downsizing.
- Structural challenges including overcapacity, high costs, and weak demand are cited as main reasons for the shutdowns.
Our industry continues to face difficult market dynamics in Europe and a persistently challenging cost and demand environment.— Jim Fitterling, Dow CEO, explaining the closures of the Schkopau and Böhlen plants.
