Key FactsThe Unfair Treatment of 'The Marvels' Box Office

- The Marvels faced significant challenges that contributed to its low box office performance, including the SAG-AFTRA strike and a lack of promotional support from its star cast. The film faced disproportionate criticism, particularly in contrast to male-centric superhero films that experienced similar failures without attracting the same level of negative attention.
- The release of The Marvels occurred just after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, which restricted the lead actresses from promoting the film. Director Nia DaCosta had to shoulder the promotional efforts alone, limiting the ability to showcase the chemistry between the main characters, negatively impacting audience engagement.
- In contrast, Jason Momoa was able to conduct a full promotional tour for Aquaman 2, despite that film also underperforming. The box office struggles of Aquaman 2 did not draw the same scrutiny as The Marvels, which ignited discussions about the superhero genre, even as other DCEU films faced similar struggles without similar backlash.
- The reception of The Marvels was heavily influenced by a wave of misogynistic criticism. As a film showcasing a female superhero team, it was unfairly judged and did not have the opportunity to succeed based on its own merits. Despite numerous obstacles, the film aimed to provide an entertaining experience and should not be held accountable for the broader box office issues facing Marvel Studios.
