- On June 10, 2025, a shooter at Borg Dreierschützengasse in Graz killed ten people and wounded eleven, including 17-year-old Sam Askari.
- Askari sustained two gunshot wounds, spent two days in an induced coma, and later documented his experience in a book published in 2026.
- During his coma, Askari dreamed of a life-or-death chess match against Garry Kasparov, which symbolized his struggle to survive.
- The book also explores Askari’s background, focusing on his immigration from Iran to Austria and his adjustment to a new life.
I knew that if I lost this game, I would die. But in the middle of the game Kasparov suddenly quit and shook my hand.— Sam Askari, in a dream recounted in the book 'Graz 10. Juni 2025' (as described by Kleine Zeitung).
