- In September 1971, Volkswagen and Karmann approved development of the coupé, with Karmann set to take over production without investment from VW.
- The pre-production run begun in November 1973 ended after nine of 45 planned bodies because of missing parts; series production started on February 4, 1974, four days late, while US versions were postponed and only 75-hp left-hand-drive L models were initially planned.
- When the car was presented in Geneva in March 1974, the Golf had not yet entered production, and the planned daily output was reached only nine months after production began through parts deliveries by truck, helicopter and taxi.
- The yellow TS built at the Karmann plant at the end of 1974 was part of a range offering up to 85 hp (63 kW), while the top model reached 175 km/h and took about 11 seconds from zero to 100 km/h.
