- Samsung has mandated its executives to work six days a week to instill a sense of urgency, as the company has fallen short of financial expectations. This decision is driven by global geopolitical issues and the depreciation of the Korean won.
- An unnamed Samsung executive stated that the six-day workweek is being introduced due to disappointing performance from major units, including Samsung Electronics, in 2023. While executives are now required to work on Saturdays or Sundays in addition to their regular five-day workweeks, employees at lower levels are not obligated to do so.
- In South Korea, the legal maximum of a 40-hour workweek allows for up to 12 hours of overtime weekly, but many workers exceed this without additional pay. Previous proposals to increase the workweek to 69 hours faced backlash and were reconsidered.
- Samsung reported a net operating loss of approximately $11 billion last year, with its semiconductor division accounting for 80% of its revenue. The company is optimistic about 2024, especially after receiving $6.4 billion from the U.S. government for chip manufacturing in Texas.
