- Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, head of Dera Sacha Sauda, received a 21-day furlough, marking his eighth release in three years.
- He is serving a 20-year sentence for raping two disciples and a life term for murdering a journalist.
- His releases often coincide with elections in northern India, totaling 184 days out of prison since 2020.
- Opponents argue the government’s repeated leniency damages public trust due to the gravity of his crimes.
The government's repeated leniency, despite the serious nature of his crimes, is creating an atmosphere of disbelief among the Sikh community. The political interests of the government are causing Ram Rahim's gruesome offenses to be overlooked, which is not in the best interest of the country.— Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, commenting on government leniency toward Ram Rahim Singh.
