- Cologne’s SPD has introduced a proposal to create three additional training sites near Geißbockheim, seeking support from the city council.
- The initiative involves converting a tennis court into artificial turf, upgrading locker facilities, and renewing a hybrid turf field with floodlights.
- The city council is scheduled to consider the proposal on July 2 to help alleviate the club’s pressing space issues.
- The football club views the plan as an effective compromise that also supports Cologne’s broader sports community.
We warmly welcome the SPD's initiative. It is a pragmatic compromise and creates a real win-win situation: We at 1. FC Köln will put our own money into upgrading outdated municipal sports facilities. For us, after years of stalemate, this concept finally offers a perspective to tangibly relieve our pressing shortage of pitches.— Philipp Türoff, managing director of 1. FC Köln, commenting on the SPD proposal and the win-win approach.

- The court ruled that the development plan drawn up by the city in 2020 is lawful; conservationists had challenged the construction and sealing of the green area.
- The upheld plan includes a new performance center at Geißbockheim, three football pitches and four public small-sided fields on Gleueler Wiese.
- Changed council majorities had so far prevented a lease for the meadow; the SPD has since enabled a majority for the satellite-pitch model, whose implementation still requires environmental reviews and bureaucratic procedures, according to the FC.
- Managing director Philipp Türoff still considers Gleueler Wiese the only fully comprehensive solution so far, while a council majority for it is viewed as highly uncertain.
We regard today’s ruling as the starting gun for a big, shared task. We want to strengthen nature conservation, the green belt, and sport, including grassroots sport. To that end, our invitation to the entire city: let us now, together, repair and expand our Cologne green belt, the green lungs of our city!— Jörn Stobbe, FC President: Reaction to the Geißbockheim expansion ruling
