- On 28 October 2021, energetic solar particles reached Earth and Mars despite their separation of about 250 million kilometres.
- The study examined measurements from international spacecraft, including Curiosity, Chang’e-4 and ExoMars TGO.
- According to measurements, 9 milligray reached Mars orbit, while 0.3 milligray was detected on the surface.
- Scientists say doses above 700 milligray can cause radiation sickness; above 10 gray, astronauts are extremely unlikely to survive longer than two weeks.
Space radiation can create a real danger to our exploration throughout the Solar System. Measurements of high-level radiation events by robotic missions is critical to prepare for long-duration crewed missions. Thanks to data from missions like ExoMars TGO we can prepare for how best to protect our human explorers.— TGO project scientist Colin Wilson said
