- The UK government has officially approved plans to expand London Gatwick Airport with a second runway.
- The expansion involves routine use of the existing northern runway, which will be shifted 12 meters to meet safety requirements.
- VINCI Airports, holding a majority stake in Gatwick, is funding the project entirely through shareholder investments.
- The development is expected to boost air traffic, trade, and tourism but may face legal challenges from local and environmental groups.
After a lengthy and rigorous planning process, we welcome the government's approval of plans to bring our Northern Runway into routine use, ahead of the expected deadline.— Steven Wingate, managing director of VINCI Airports, in a statement posted on Gatwick's website.
