- On Wednesday, Ryosei Akazawa urged swift implementation in Washington of the agreed cuts on automobiles and auto parts.
- The deal reached last month calls for U.S. auto tariffs to fall from 27.5 to 15 percent, but sets no start date.
- The deal provided for tariffs on most other Japanese goods to fall from 25 to 15 percent Thursday, but written confirmation was absent.
- Asahi, citing an unnamed White House official, reported that the 15 percent would be added; Hayashi said this was unlikely.
In negotiating with the U.S., Minister Akazawa at least ought to have nailed down exactly when U.S. automobile tariffs would be lowered to 15%.— Ken Saito, ruling-party heavyweight and former trade minister, told Reuters on Tuesday.
