German Heritage of British RoyaltySince 1714, British monarchs have had German roots, including George I's accession and Queen Victoria's 64-year reign.
- German Elector Georg Ludwig of Hanover became King George I of Great Britain in 1714, starting the German lineage on the British throne.
- His grandson George III, the first English-born German-descended monarch, married German princess Charlotte and fathered 15 children.
- Queen Victoria, called the 'Grandmother of Europe,' enhanced the monarchy's prestige by marrying her children into European royal families.
- In the 20th century, George V changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor amid World War I and anti-German sentiment.
