Experts warn Great Nicobar project threatens ShompenIndia’s planned 720bn-rupee scheme would combine a port, power plant, airport and township across 166 square kilometres.
- According to government estimates, around 650,000 people are expected to live on the island when construction finishes in 30 years.
- The nomadic Shompen number about 400 people, and experts fear losing their habitat and traditional way of life.
- The Environment Ministry said 130 square kilometres, or 14% of the island, would be cleared; experts say more than 964,000 trees could be affected.
- The government says nesting grounds would remain unchanged; ecologists warn of possible effects on leatherback turtles in Galathea Bay.
The project will not disturb or displace tribespeople.— Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, speaking in August about the Great Nicobar project.
