For “Steadfast Noon,” three Tornados from Tactical Air Force Wing 33 are to move from Büchel to Aviano in northern Italy.

According to NATO, the exercise beginning Tuesday should match last year’s scale; about 2,000 military personnel and over 70 aircraft participated then.

Military experts say transport and mounting are practiced; subsequent attack drills use only practice bombs without real nuclear warheads.

NATO says the exercise is unrelated to current events and is not directed against any specific country.

"Steadfast Noon" should demonstrate that NATO is prepared to defend the alliance in the event of a need and that it also has the necessary capabilities. Real nuclear weapons would, of course, not be used.— Nassima Barrows, NATO's head of nuclear policy, explained this to the press regarding the upcoming exercise.
