Crate Day drivers enter Ashley River despite nesting warningsAbout 70 four-wheel-drivers reached a Canterbury riverbed on Saturday despite DOC signs marking it restricted during nesting season.
- The Ashley-Rakahuri Rivercare Group said the drivers ignored both its Facebook appeal and Department of Conservation (DOC) signs designating the area as restricted during nesting season.
- According to the group, four-wheel-drives travel up and down the upper Ashley River each year as part of the unofficial drinking event Crate Day.
- Spokesperson Judith Hughey warned that the vehicles could endanger chicks and that leaking contaminants could harm insects and fish on which the birds depend.
- DOC ranger Sandy Yong said enforcement was difficult; DOC had increased signage, planned to assess damage this week and was considering additional measures.
You almost need to have someone on site where a nest is, and demonstrate that a vehicle has gone over the nest, then be able to almost effectively stop the driver and get evidence directly,— Sandy Yong, DOC biodiversity ranger; commenting on enforcement challenges at the nest during Crate Day at the Ashley River
