Teacher's Contract Ended Over Student Name Policy ViolationA Florida teacher lost her contract after calling a student by their preferred name without parental consent, sparking public outcry.
- A Florida high school teacher's contract was not renewed for using a student's preferred name without written parental approval.
- The school district stated this action violated state law and policies protecting parents' rights as primary decision-makers.
- Supporters launched a petition with over 26,000 signatures defending the teacher as an advocate for student respect and rights.
- The case prompted protests and a review of her teaching certification by state officials amid broader debates on gender policies in schools.
Her offense? An unintentional violation of the nickname policy. There was no harm, no threat to safety, no malicious intent, just a teacher trying to connect with a student, and for that, her contract was not renewed, despite her strong dedication and years of service.— Kristine Staniec, media specialist at Satellite High School, passionately speaks about her colleague at the Brevard Public Schools board meeting.
