Germany’s Fiber Optic Expansion Faces Major ObstaclesBy end of 2026, fiber optic cables will reach 32 million households, but high costs and low contract rates challenge growth.
- Fiber optic coverage in Germany is set to reach 32 million households by 2026, yet only about one in four signs up for service.
- Elevated construction expenses, rising interest rates, and unclear regulations severely limit profitability and investment confidence.
- Several providers, including Ruhrfibre, face financial distress and urgently seek new funding to continue network expansion.
- Older technologies like DSL and cable internet remain widely used as they provide sufficient speeds, slowing fiber adoption.
The topic of fiber-optic expansion in Germany has almost become toxic for financiers.— Andreas Pfisterer, CEO of Deutsche Glasfaser, at the Anga Com trade fair
