- According to a league source familiar with the situation, the Vikings plan to enter the 2026 season with Murray, and ESPN first reported the news on Tuesday.
- Coach Kevin O’Connell said the choice does not change Minnesota’s focus on J.J. McCarthy’s continued development.
- According to the report, McCarthy’s inconsistency contributed to the Vikings choosing Murray as the player they viewed as better positioned for immediate success in 2026.
- The Vikings have already added formations and concepts intended to use Murray’s strengths, including pass designs paired with similar-looking run plays from shotgun and pistol sets.
This decision does not shift the team’s focus on further development for 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.— Kevin O’Connell, Vikings head coach, said this about McCarthy’s development after naming Kyler Murray the starter.
