- According to the RKI, confirmed COVID-19 cases rose steadily in recent weeks, while wastewater virus levels most recently remained stable.
- The WHO rates the global health risk as low and reports no evidence that Stratus causes more severe illness or deaths; vaccines therefore continue to reliably protect against severe disease.
- XFG resulted from a recombination of the Omicron variants LF.7 and LP.8.1.2, was first detected in January 2025, and accounted for a quarter of recorded cases worldwide in early June.
- US media list very severe sore throats and hoarseness alongside fever, runny nose and cough as possible symptoms, while Prof. Dr. Carsten Watzl recommends vaccination mainly for people over 60 and risk groups.
We also need to make the annual COVID-19 vaccination part of our preventive measures.— Prof. Dr. Carsten Watzl, immunologist and head of the Immunology Research Department at the Leibniz Institute for Occupational Research (IfADo) at TU Dortmund, told this newsroom.
