EU commends Spain’s response to Ceuta migrant crisisSpain says about 70,000 of the 72,000 arrivals were returned to Morocco.
- About 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta between 30 and 31 July, Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said, with an estimated 70,000 returned to Morocco.
- At Tuesday’s meeting of EU interior ministers, the bloc praised Spain’s rapid action, expressed solidarity and offered emergency funding for border security and crisis management.
- Italy suspended its Schengen agreement with Spain on Friday, which would effectively mean extra checks on flights because the countries have no shared land border; Finland and Denmark supported the move.
- Remaining migrants in Ceuta received food, water and other aid, while local media reported that about 800 children were in facilities across the city and Spain’s government allocated around €25m to support minors.
"uncontrolled immigration" was a security threat to Europe.— Giorgia Meloni, Italy's prime minister, said this in the context of the Ceuta migrant crisis.
