Brazilian farmers struggle with drought and firesLess rain than usual is forecast for October, while several major harvests are at risk.
- Brazil’s worst drought in seven decades has fueled fires across the country in recent weeks and put sugarcane, Arabica coffee, orange and soybean harvests at risk.
- Around 230,000 of the four million hectares in São Paulo state’s main sugarcane region have been affected; the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Union says half of the damaged area remains unharvested, while José Guilherme Nogueira expects sugar yields there to fall by half.
- In southeastern Minas Gerais, which produces 70 percent of Brazil’s Arabica coffee, José Marcos Magalhães described the water deficit as the worst in 40 years, while strong rain by the end of the month is needed for a normal 2025 harvest.
- Fundecitrus expects orange production to decline by nearly 30 percent, while Conab forecasts a 4.7 percent fall in soybean production because of last year’s drought and flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, with the current drought delaying planting.
This is the sector that emits the most greenhouse gases in Brazil. It must reduce them and put an end to deforestation. It must open its eyes.— Carlos Nobre, climatologist, commenting on the agriculture sector's responsibility in climate change and the need to reduce emissions and stop deforestation
