- At Westlake/MacArthur Park’s B and D Line station, loud classical music has played continuously for about one month.
- Metro says the music should support brief transit stops while making hours-long loitering unattractive.
- Metro spokesman Dave Sotero said reported crime fell about 20 percent and emergency-service calls declined 75 percent.
- Musicologist Lily Hirsch says the tactic may work short-term but does not solve homelessness, only pushing the problem elsewhere.
"The imposition of sound is a kind of violence," she said.— Lily Hirsch, a musicologist and visiting scholar at Cal State Bakersfield, said in an interview on Monday, March 13.
