- Premier Danielle Smith announced a referendum question for October 19 that would authorize the legal steps needed for a future binding vote on Alberta’s separation from Canada.
- The question was added following a court ruling that invalidated a separatist petition due to insufficient consultation with First Nations.
- Smith highlighted that the referendum respects the demands of over 700,000 petition signatories on both sides and aims to move the debate forward.
- The government’s position favors a strong Alberta within a united Canada and calls for patience and unity amid ongoing political tensions.
Kicking the can down the road only prolongs a very emotional and important debate and muzzling the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans wanting to be heard is unjustifiable in a free and democratic society.— Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, in her paid televised address
