- PC Andrew Harper, 28, from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, died from his injuries in 2019 after becoming caught in a tow rope and being dragged behind a getaway car.
- Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers could be released early in 2027 under a scheme addressing prison overcrowding, while Prime Minister Andy Burnham halted the Sentencing Act passed in January amid concerns over eligibility and said offenders could be released after serving half their sentences.
- The petition started by Aileen O’Connor reached 881,204 signatures, while she jointly asked with Chief Constable Jason Hogg and Commissioner Matthew Barber for an amendment excluding certain manslaughter sentences from the early-release scheme.
- On BBC Radio Four’s Any Questions?, broadcast live from Milton Keynes on Friday evening, Labour MP Hamish Falconer said he would not sign the petition, while Andrew Rosindell, Lord David Willetts and Munira Wilson responded differently to the possible release.
There is no other acceptable outcome than Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole serving their full sentence behind bars.— Matthew Barber, Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, on the amendment to the Sentencing Act and the potential early release of PC Andrew Harper's killers
