Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara secured Japan’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in pairs figure skating at the Milan Games.

Despite a shaky short program, they delivered a world record free skate score of 158.13 points to climb from fifth place.

Their total of 231.24 points surpassed all competitors, including Georgia’s team winning the country’s first Winter Olympic medal.

Coach Bruno Marcotte used prior Olympic comebacks to inspire the pair, boosting their confidence for the final performance.

At this point, we still can't believe that this has happened since yesterday's performance. It's a little bit of a disbelief, almost, that we're able to get a medal for Japan pair skating for the first time ever, and we hope that our performance tonight is going to lead Japan skating community into the future to perform better and better moving forward.
— Riku Miura, reflecting on their historic win.
