The annual competition is being held for the 14th time and targets senior secondary students in Nigeria and across the African continent.

The prizes are 7.5 million naira for first place, 5 million naira for second place and 3.5 million naira for third place.

The essay topic is “The Impact of Carbon Emission on Climate in Nigeria: Challenges and Solutions,” and entries must be uploaded through a digital portal by November 8, 2024.

After 75 top entries receive 75,000 naira each, 75 candidates will compete in Abuja, Enugu, Lagos and Port Harcourt for 20 finalist places, after which three winners will be chosen and the finalists will receive laptops and other educational tools.

We are aware of what families and parents are going through, especially in the face of the current economic climate in Nigeria, and by raising the first-place prize to N7.5m, with N5m and N3.5m for second and third places, respectively, we are making a bold statement about our dedication to African education.
— Bola Atta, CEO of UBA Foundation, said this ahead of the 2024 national essay competition and explained the prize increase to support African education.
