- The PlayStation founder discussed a possible move away from discs with Video Games Chronicle at Game Republic New Horizons.
- Kutaragi said he understands the frustration but considers continued disc production economically unreasonable.
- He suggested Sony might pursue an all-digital device, a direction that has caused friction with game enthusiasts.
- He also criticized high hardware prices and said fully leveraging AI and cloud computing could make consoles unnecessary.
I understand that physical discs have become a metaphor for 'owning' games. I really understand that mentality... But nobody thinks [physical media] is necessary for a networked device like a smartphone, for example, because people feel that they will keep their content. So it's a mentality.— Ken Kutaragi, founder of PlayStation, at the Game Republic New Horizons event, in an interview with Video Games Chronicle
