Quick Glance: Mission Divyastra: Understanding MIRV Technology of Agni-5 Missile
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the successful maiden test flight of India's Agni-5 missile using Multiple Independently-targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. This allows a single missile to strike multiple warheads simultaneously and is currently utilized by only a few select nations.
- Developed during the Cold War arms race, the MIRV technology was first deployed by the United States in 1970 and is now possessed by India, the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France.
- The Agni-5 missile, India's fifth variant of long-range ballistic missile, has the capability to target ranges of 5,000 to 5,500 km, carry nuclear warheads, and is equipped with advanced navigation systems for precision strikes.
- Pakistan has also successfully tested a MIRV-capable missile named Ababeel in response to India's ballistic missile defense efforts. Israel is reported to be in possession of or in the process of developing MIRV-equipped missiles as well.
