- In the epic, Achilles refuses to fight after Agamemnon takes Briseis, while Patroclus wears his armor, is killed by Hector, and prompts Achilles’ retaliation.
- Romantic interpretations point to Achilles’ wish to conquer Troy with Patroclus, his love for him, their request for a shared burial, and the lock of hair.
- The article identifies Xenophon’s account of Socrates as apparently the earliest surviving ancient comment, interpreting Patroclus as Achilles’ comrade while also stressing cultural differences in mourning practices.
- In the article’s assessment, the descriptions of them as comrades, Nestor’s reference to a friend’s advice, and the absence of a designation as lovers in the Iliad and Odyssey favor friendship.
Homer pictures us Achilles looking upon Patroclus not as the object of his passion but as a comrade, and in this spirit signally avenging his death.— Socrates, as reported by Xenophon in the Symposium (ancient Greece)
