- The series presents blood sharing between vampires as a personal, intimate exchange that signals trust and care.
- After her transformation in the fourth season’s premiere, Elena initially fails to feed on animals and therefore turns to Damon for help.
- Elena tries Damon’s solution in season 4, episode 2, after which Stefan learns about it, punches Damon, and the relationships come under strain.
- Blood sharing appears more frequently in the books and fan fiction and is described as a nod to L.J. Smith’s novels and vampire folklore, while the series largely limits it to Damon and Elena.
If you look at any of it metaphorically, it’s a very intimate exchange of bodily fluids. So you can read into that what you will. Well, it's like vampire naked cuddling.— Julie Plec, discussing blood sharing in The Vampire Diaries; quoted in Entertainment Weekly (2012).
