- Russia is increasingly equipping its Su-35 fighter jets with R-37M long-range air-to-air missiles, enhancing their threat to NATO aircraft.
- The R-37M missile offers roughly 200 miles of range, significantly surpassing the older R-77-1’s approximate 62-mile reach.
- Su-35 pilots are highly trained and coordinate effectively with ground-based air defenses, increasing the jets’ combat effectiveness.
- Despite combat losses, Russia’s Su-35 numbers have grown since 2020, strengthening its air force’s capabilities amid the Ukraine conflict.
Su-35 crews are typically 'much better at working with the ground-based air defenses,' meaning the jets can operate more effectively under the umbrella of Russian surface-to-air missile systems and are therefore 'more credible as an air-to-air threat.'— Justin Bronk, a researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, explained in a discussion with Business Insider about the improvement of Russian air forces.
