Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Sparks Cultural DebateThe opening showcased Greek mythology and French history, featuring 17th-century art inspiration and symbolic figures along the Seine river.
- The opening tableau drew from Jan Harmens van Bijlert’s 1635 painting 'The Feast of the Gods,' not Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper.
- Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus were central figures, highlighting the Olympics’ roots in ancient Greek culture.
- A decapitated woman symbolized Marie Antoinette, representing France’s transition from monarchy to republic.
- The ceremony emphasized Paris’s Seine river and cultural landmarks, placing the city’s heritage above the athletes.
