- Neighborhoods with growing undocumented populations recorded falling property crime, little change in violent crime and more robberies.
- The researchers theorized that undocumented residents may be more likely to be robbery victims than perpetrators because they rely more heavily on cash.
- Unlike earlier research at the metropolitan and state levels, the study examined the relationship between immigration and crime at the neighborhood level.
- Lead author Charis Kubrin said immigration-enforcement measures are largely ineffective at improving public safety and may do more harm than good.
It’s well beyond time to rethink immigration enforcement in this country.— Charis Kubrin, study lead author and UC Irvine Chancellor’s Professor of Criminology, Law and Society, commented on the study findings that there is no link between undocumented immigrants and crime rates.
