Hay and Cobwebs Pose Fire Risks on FarmsAfter two fires near Tübingen and Grosselfingen, the causes remain unclear.
- A horse farm burned in Tübingen-Pfrondorf in September; days earlier, around 400 chickens died near Grosselfingen.
- Insurance expert Alexander Küsel recommends measuring hay temperature daily for two weeks; above 60 degrees, it can become dangerous.
- According to Baden-Württemberg’s state firefighters’ association, cobwebs can rapidly spread fires through airflow and trapped dust or grease.
- Outdated electrical systems and short circuits are further risks; major fires causing at least €500,000 in damage numbered 10 to 60 annually for 25 years.
Because the thin threads have a large surface area and, at the same time, enough air to burn well. In addition, dust or fat trapped in cobwebs act as additional accelerants. It can lead to a so-called flashover. This means the fire can quickly spread to a large area.— Klaus Merz, Vice President of the Baden-Württemberg State Fire Brigade Association
