Europe’s Ports Evolve into Strategic Military HubsRotterdam and Antwerp prepare for five military ships annually while the EU aims for a military Schengen zone by 2027.
- Rotterdam and Antwerp allocate space and coordinate operations to facilitate military ship docking and NATO landing exercises.
- Antwerp processes 30,000 containers daily and can swiftly accommodate up to 2,000 US military vehicles when needed.
- The EU plans to establish a military Schengen zone by 2027 to enable faster border crossings and shared infrastructure use.
- Improved corridors and infrastructure upgrades will speed troop movements to NATO’s eastern flank amid rising geopolitical tensions.
This is unfortunately the new reality, and as NATO ports, we are heavily involved in this new reality.— Jacques Vandermeiren, Port Chief of Antwerp, on the changes in European ports in light of geopolitical tensions.
