Challenges Ahead for Bottle Returns in OntarioOntario's Beer Store closures threaten existing collection systems as charities prepare to increase pickups amid concerns of landfill rises.
- Multiple Beer Store locations are shutting down across Ontario, impacting the processing of 1.6 billion empty alcohol containers annually and creating new collection opportunities for charities.
- Non-profits like Operation Come Home plan to add trucks and expand their bottle collection services throughout Ottawa to accommodate increased demand.
- Animal rescue fundraisers anticipate more donations as customers seek convenient local options instead of traveling farther for returns.
- A waste reduction advocate warns that Ontario’s 50% container return rate may decline further due to reduced access and insufficient alternative collection points.
The options to recover those containers are frankly disappearing.— Duncan Bury, co-founder of Waste Watch Ottawa, expresses concern about the declining container return system.
