- Donald Trump signed a proclamation on June 4, doubling steel and aluminum tariffs to 50 percent effective immediately.
- The increase followed 25 percent tariffs that took effect March 12 after eliminating most country exemptions.
- Analysts warn that higher tariffs could raise prices for canned goods, beverages, vehicles, and housing as manufacturers pass on costs.
- Canada protested while Mexico plans to request an exemption; Canada and the EU reportedly consider expanding retaliatory-tariff lists.
It's not equitable and it's not sustainable. We will present our case on Friday to have Mexico excluded from this measure.— Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico, commenting on the tariff measure
