Researchers find 35 peptides in carpenter ant venomThe peptides could support nest hygiene and open new possibilities for medical research and understanding immune defenses.
- Researchers comparatively examined venom from eight geographically distant carpenter ant species.
- They identified 35 peptides, called formicitoxins, from two gene families; compositions varied between species.
- Some peptides reportedly show remarkable antifungal properties and could extend nest protection beyond formic acid’s effects.
- The study also describes venom functions involving disinfection, gut acidification, communication, and defense.
Some of the peptides demonstrate remarkable antifungal properties. This is particularly interesting when we consider the threat that environmental microbes and pathogens pose to social communities such as ants, as well as the increased threat of microbial resistance for human well-being.— Dr. Simon Tragust, project lead at the Institute of Biology, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, speaking about the antifungal properties of the peptides in carpenter ant venom.
