Quick Glance: California's Highway 1 Section Collapses in Landslide
- A 40-mile section of California's Highway 1 remained closed after a landslide during a major storm caused chunks of the road to fall down a cliff, leaving approximately 1,600 people stranded.
- Engineers were still assessing the damage, and the highway was closed Monday in both directions near Palo Colorado, about 14 miles south of Monterey, and between Limekiln State Park and Lime Creek.
- All Big Sur state parks in the affected area were closed to visitors until further notice, according to Monterey County.
- About 1,600 people, including tourists and locals visiting Big Sur for Easter weekend, were initially stranded, but most were escorted out by emergency convoys on Sunday after it was deemed safe to travel on the highway's northbound lane.
