Governor Jim Pillen is considering a special session to change Nebraska's electoral system to ensure Donald Trump wins all the state's electoral votes. However, this move is not as straightforward for Trump as Governor Pillen believes. It would not only make our state less democratic but could also backfire, potentially making Nebraska the deciding state that hands the election to President Joe Biden.

Pillen and Republican allies are pushing to switch Nebraska to a winner-take-all system to secure all five electoral votes for Trump. This plan is likely to backfire, as opponents are expected to organize a ballot initiative to reverse it.

Nebraska has a law allowing voters to challenge a bill before it becomes law through a petition process. If opponents gather the required 125,000 signatures, Pillen's transition to a winner-take-all system would be postponed until after November's general election and could be halted altogether if a majority of voters support the referendum.

A ballot initiative would also benefit Democrats in the 2nd District, a true swing district. If successful, it could serve as an additional motivating issue for voters who rightly oppose Trump's interference with the state's democracy for his own gain.
