Kansas clinic temporarily halts abortions over leadership shakeup
Quick Glance: Kansas Clinic Temporarily Ceases Abortions Due to Leadership Changes
  • A women's health clinic in Kansas has temporarily stopped offering a controversial procedure, exacerbating services in one of the few states in the region still permitting abortions.

  • The recent decision at the Trust Women clinic in Wichita was a result of a shift in leadership, highlighted in an article by the reproductive rights-focused publication Rewire News Group.

  • Established in 2013, Trust Women opened the Wichita clinic in the same location where Dr. George Tiller, a local abortion provider, practiced before his tragic death at the hands of an anti-abortion extremist in 2009.

  • Following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, Kansas became the first state where voters had a say on abortion, rejecting a constitutional amendment in August 2022 that could have led to a ban on abortions.

Quick Glance: Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signs legislation to repeal Civil War-era abortion ban
  • Katie Hobbs, the Democratic governor of Arizona, has signed legislation to repeal a long-standing abortion ban from the Civil War era.

  • The bill to abolish the long-dormant law, which prohibits all abortions except those to save a patient's life, received final Senate approval on Wednesday.

  • Repealing the law would make a 2022 statute banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy the prevailing abortion law in Arizona.

  • There are discussions among Republican lawmakers about introducing one or more alternative abortion proposals on the November ballot.

Ex-US marine sentenced to nine years for California abortion clinic attack
Quick Glance: Former Marine sentenced to 9 years in prison for firebombing California Planned Parenthood clinic
  • A former marine was sentenced to nine years in prison by the Justice Department on Monday after using a Molotov cocktail to attack a Planned Parenthood clinic in Costa Mesa, California. Chance Brannon, along with his co-defendant Tibet Ergul, plotted attacks on the clinic and a potential target on the power grid in 'furtherance of a race war.'

  • Brannon, 24, pleaded guilty in November 2023 to being involved in a conspiracy, malicious destruction of property by fire and explosives, possession of an unregistered destructive device, and intentionally damaging a reproductive health services facility in violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.

  • Planned Parenthood clinic attacks were abandoned due to law enforcement actions. Brannon was motivated by neo-Nazi ideology and planned further violent attacks. The National Abortion Federation reported a sharp increase in violence at abortion clinics in 2022.

  • Brannon and Ergul also had plans to conduct an attack using a remote-detonated device during an LGBTQ+ pride event at Dodger Stadium, but were arrested two days prior. Before the arrest, Brannon even planned to rob Jewish individuals living in the Hollywood Hills.

Quick Glance: Abbott Stands Firm on 'Invasion' Declaration After Supreme Court Setback
  • Governor Greg Abbott accuses the federal government of breaking the agreement with the states after the Supreme Court ruled on Monday allowing the Border Patrol to remove razor wire installed by Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • The latest escalation in a legal and political standoff between Texas and the federal government, although Abbott has not announced any specific measures.

  • Since then, the governor has systematically increased the border enforcement roles of the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard, citing the constitutional authority for a state to defend itself against invasion.

  • Although the Supreme Court this week allowed federal officials, namely the Border Patrol, to remove razor wire installed by Texas, that order did not affect other flashpoints in the uneasy relationship between feds and state agents.
