Quick Glance: Hospitalization for Influenza Associated with Higher Risk of Neurological Disorders
- An analysis of 77,300 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 compared to 77,300 hospitalized with influenza revealed that those with influenza had a greater risk of subsequent neurologic disorders such as migraine, stroke, or epilepsy.
- Participants hospitalized with COVID-19 were significantly less likely in the following year to require medical care for migraine, epilepsy, neuropathy, movement disorders, stroke, and dementia compared to influenza patients.
- After considering age, sex, and other health conditions, individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 had a lower risk of needing medical care for migraine, epilepsy, and neuropathy than those with influenza.
- "The results were surprising as they indicate that hospitalization due to COVID does not lead to increased care for common neurologic conditions compared to hospitalization due to influenza," stated lead researcher Brian C. Callaghan, MD, from the University of Michigan.

Quick Glance: California Voters Approve Measure to Combat Homelessness
- California voters have approved measures that mandate counties to allocate funds for housing and drug rehabilitation programs to address the homelessness crisis.
- Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, successfully advocated for the measure, which represents an update to the state's health system and required significant financial backing.
- The measure gives the state more control over a voter-approved tax enacted in 2004 for mental health services and obligates counties to spend about two-thirds of the funds on housing and programs for homeless individuals with severe mental illnesses or substance abuse issues.
- Opponents argued that the change jeopardizes programs not solely focused on housing or drug rehabilitation, but on preventing individuals from becoming homeless in the first place.

Poverty in Italy hits new high despite economic recovery: The number of people living in poverty in Italy rose in 2023 to its highest level in about a decade ...
reuters.com/markets/europe/poverty-italy-hits-new-high-despite-economic-recovery-2024-03-25/
Quick Glance: Poverty in Italy reaches new high despite economic recovery
- Poverty in Italy reached a new high in 2023 despite an economic rebound since the easing of COVID-related restrictions. According to data from the national statistics bureau ISTAT, the number of people living in 'absolute poverty' - unable to purchase essential goods and services - rose to 5.75 million, or 9.8% of the population.
- While Italy's economy has recovered more strongly from a 2020-21 COVID-induced recession compared to neighbors like Germany and France, the rebound has done little to help the country's poorest. The percentage of those in absolute poverty was 9.1% in 2020 and 9.0% in 2021, during the peak of the pandemic when government support measures partly offset the recession's impact on families.
- Except for a decrease in 2019, poverty has steadily risen from 6.9% in 2014 when ISTAT's data series began. Last year, Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government started phasing out a poverty relief subsidy called 'citizens' income' introduced in 2019.
- Poverty levels in 2023 increased in the north and centre compared to the previous year while decreasing in the south according to ISTAT data. Despite the economic recovery, poverty alleviation remains a challenge in Italy, especially in the poorer southern regions of the country.
