- The protection provided lasted up to a year and also decreased the likelihood of heart inflammation and specific types of blood clots.
- These findings were recently published in the journal Heart, indicating that the protection against heart and blood flow issues through vaccinations outweighs associated risks.
- Analysis of health data from more than 20 million individuals in the UK, Spain, and Estonia demonstrates that vaccinated individuals have a lower risk of heart failure and blood clots.

Quick Glance: Hospitalization for Influenza Associated with Higher Risk of Neurological Disorders
- An analysis of 77,300 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 compared to 77,300 hospitalized with influenza revealed that those with influenza had a greater risk of subsequent neurologic disorders such as migraine, stroke, or epilepsy.
- Participants hospitalized with COVID-19 were significantly less likely in the following year to require medical care for migraine, epilepsy, neuropathy, movement disorders, stroke, and dementia compared to influenza patients.
- After considering age, sex, and other health conditions, individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 had a lower risk of needing medical care for migraine, epilepsy, and neuropathy than those with influenza.
- "The results were surprising as they indicate that hospitalization due to COVID does not lead to increased care for common neurologic conditions compared to hospitalization due to influenza," stated lead researcher Brian C. Callaghan, MD, from the University of Michigan.

- The study deepens and complicates the understanding of the so-called 'anthropause' and underscores the multifaceted ways in which humans influence the lives of wild animals.

Quick Glance: Prolonged Presence of COVID Virus in the Body
- Researchers at the University of California in San Francisco have determined that remnants of the COVID-19 virus can persist in blood and tissue for more than a year after the initial infection.
- During their examination of long-lasting COVID, scientists identified COVID antigens in the blood up to 14 months post-infection and in tissue samples for over 2 years after the infection.
- These research findings offer compelling evidence that COVID antigens may endure in certain individuals even following regular immune responses.
- The UCSF research team is actively engaged in clinical trials to assess the potential of monoclonal antibodies or antiviral medications in eliminating the virus.

reuters.com/markets/europe/poverty-italy-hits-new-high-despite-economic-recovery-2024-03-25/
Quick Glance: Poverty in Italy reaches new high despite economic recovery
- Poverty in Italy reached a new high in 2023 despite an economic rebound since the easing of COVID-related restrictions. According to data from the national statistics bureau ISTAT, the number of people living in 'absolute poverty' - unable to purchase essential goods and services - rose to 5.75 million, or 9.8% of the population.
- While Italy's economy has recovered more strongly from a 2020-21 COVID-induced recession compared to neighbors like Germany and France, the rebound has done little to help the country's poorest. The percentage of those in absolute poverty was 9.1% in 2020 and 9.0% in 2021, during the peak of the pandemic when government support measures partly offset the recession's impact on families.
- Except for a decrease in 2019, poverty has steadily risen from 6.9% in 2014 when ISTAT's data series began. Last year, Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government started phasing out a poverty relief subsidy called 'citizens' income' introduced in 2019.
- Poverty levels in 2023 increased in the north and centre compared to the previous year while decreasing in the south according to ISTAT data. Despite the economic recovery, poverty alleviation remains a challenge in Italy, especially in the poorer southern regions of the country.
