Quick Glance: Global Coral Bleaching Event After Extreme Heat
  • US climate agency NOAA declares a concerning global coral bleaching event for the fourth time in history after a year of extreme ocean heat.

  • Impacts of coral bleaching span oceans worldwide, with sea surface temperatures at record levels.

  • Corals under extreme heat stress can recover, but otherwise, the reef requires several years to regenerate.

  • Despite losses, some reefs show signs of color, offering hope for potential recovery, while scientists caution about the escalating impacts.

British man running length of Africa nears finish line | Africanews
Quick Glance: He Succeeded! 'Hardest Geezer' Russ Cook Completes Grueling Challenge of Running Length of Africa
  • British Russ Cook, self-proclaimed 'Hardest Geezer,' has completed a nearly year-long grueling challenge of running the length of Africa. Starting from the most southern point in South Africa, Cape Agulhas, he finished at Ras Angela, Tunisia, the most northern point of the continent.

  • During his journey through 16 countries, Cook faced extreme heat, physical exhaustion, and dangerous situations including armed robbery in Angola and separation from his supporters in the jungle of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Utilizing social media, he secured a visa to cross the border from Mauritania into Algeria.

  • Cook has raised over £600,000 for two charities and plans a celebration with a performance by the band Soft Play to mark his accomplishments. The funds collected will benefit The Running Charity and Sandblast. Despite Africa being his most significant challenge, it wasn't his first, having previously run from Asia to England.

  • The 27-year-old invited his supporters to run the final marathon with him and arranged a finish line party featuring a live performance by Soft Play in Tunisia. Through this challenge, known as Project Africa, Cook not only pushed physical boundaries but also raised substantial funds for charitable causes supporting the mental health of young individuals and educating about Sahrawi culture.

Why Botswana wants to send Germany 20,000 elephants
Quick Glance: Dispute over Hunting Trophies: Botswana Offers Germany 20,000 Elephants
  • In reaction to a proposed EU regulation on hunting trophies of protected species, Botswana's President offers Germany 20,000 elephants.

  • Botswana, hosting the largest elephant population in Africa, faces concerns of overpopulation. A hunting ban was lifted, and now 20,000 elephants are planned to be sent to Germany.

  • The President emphasizes the necessity of regulating the elephant population through hunting and insists they should live in the wild in Germany.

  • Botswana, recognized as a model democracy, invites the German minister to assess wildlife conservation firsthand. The logistical challenge of transporting 20,000 elephants over 8,000 kilometers is discussed.

Stranded cruise passengers in Africa race to rejoin their ship
Quick Glance: Passengers Stranded: Drama Unfolds After Cruise Leaves Without Them
  • Eight passengers were left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship departed without them as they were late to return from a private tour.

  • The group of eight tourists, six from the U.S. and two from Australia, were abandoned by the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship after failing to make it back on time, leading them to make their own travel arrangements to catch up with the ship.

  • Due to bad weather and tidal restrictions preventing the ship from docking in Banjul, Gambia, the guests had to travel through seven countries in 48 hours to rejoin the ship in Dakar, Senegal.

  • A silver lining of the ordeal was the encounter with another stranded passenger who was left behind on the island for medical reasons and was assisted by the other tourists to safely return home.
