Fumio Kishida Withdraws from LDP Presidential Race; New Japanese Prime Minister to Take Office

Quick Glance: Political Turmoil in Japan: Kishida Announces Resignation
- Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that he will not seek re-election as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in September. This decision comes amid plummeting support due to a corruption scandal, rising living costs, and a declining yen, with Kishida's approval ratings dropping to 15.5%, the lowest in over a decade.
- During a press conference, Kishida emphasized the need for the LDP to demonstrate a change in order to regain public trust. He stated that a transparent election and open debates are essential, marking his resignation as a necessary first step towards this transformation.
- Concerns within the party have arisen regarding Kishida's ability to lead the LDP to victory in the 2025 general elections. His resignation was met with regret from party members, who acknowledged his successes in foreign and domestic policy, yet felt he was compelled to step down due to political pressures stemming from the corruption scandal. The LDP is currently working to repair its image.
- Analysts have characterized the current political climate in Japan as a 'once-in-a-generation' crisis. The combination of political scandals and economic hardships has eroded trust in the ruling party despite a divided opposition. Notably, Kishida has gained recognition for his diplomatic efforts, strengthening defense ties with the US and South Korea, despite facing significant domestic challenges.

Nankai Trough Earthquake Misinformation Spreads on Social Media; Japan Govt Asks Platforms to Take Action
japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/society/general-news/20240810-204166/
Quick Glance: Explainer: Understanding the Significance of Japan's Nankai Trough Megaquake Advisory
- Japan has issued a warning on elevated risks of a mega earthquake for the first time, following a strong magnitude 7.1 quake occurring at the edge of an unstable seabed zone along the Pacific coast, known as the Nankai Trough. A potential mega earthquake and tsunami disaster in the Nankai Trough could result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and cause trillion-dollar damages to Japan.
- Situated off the southwest Pacific coast of Japan, the Nankai Trough extends for about 900 km, where the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate. The accumulating tectonic strains could lead to a mega earthquake approximately every 100 to 150 years. Such an event would be expected to claim the lives of up to 323,000 people and destroy 2.38 million buildings, equivalent to about a third of Japan's annual GDP.
- A mega earthquake could generate maximum measurable tremors in areas from central Shizuoka to southwestern Mizazaki, with a potential tsunami of up to 30 meters reaching the Pacific coasts of Japan within minutes. This, combined with landslides and fires, is projected to compel nearly 10 million survivors to evacuate.
- Nankai Trough earthquakes have been recorded in Japan's historical records since 684, often accompanied by reports of tsunamis hitting coastal villages. The most recent Nankai Trough earthquake occurred in 1946 with a magnitude 8.0 quake and a 6.9-meter tsunami, resulting in the loss of 1,330 lives.
