NCAA women's title game: Early figures make it most-watched hoops game in 5 years
apnews.com/article/march-madness-iowa-south-carolina-ratings-fe3c29aabbea557d83a911afb4ebf637
Quick Glance: Record Audience at NCAA Women's Championship
- South Carolina's victory over Caitlin Clark and Iowa in Sunday's women's NCAA championship game garnered a preliminary average viewership of 18.7 million on ABC and ESPN.
- Nielsen's final numbers on Tuesday may reveal an increase in viewership.
- It marks the most-watched basketball game since 2019, when the men's NCAA title game between Virginia and Texas Tech averaged 19.6 million viewers on CBS.
- The women's final also recorded the highest viewership for a Sunday afternoon sporting event on ESPN and ABC since early 2021.

Quick Glance: Arkansas Saves Kentucky and John Calipari
- John Calipari and Kentucky were on the brink of giving it one more shot. Arkansas saved them from themselves - and that's good for everyone.
- The relationship between the 65-year-old Hall of Fame coach and the elite program was not just dull but also burdensome. When athletic director Mitch Barnhart and Calipari sat for a local television interview last month to assure fans that they were on the same page and committed to getting the Wildcats back on top, it seemed more like a hostage video.
- Arkansas and its billionaire supporters unexpectedly intervened to recruit the coach nobody else pursued and offer him a compensation beyond what others could provide. Everyone benefits. Perhaps not the Razorbacks - time will tell - but certainly Calipari and Kentucky. He was in desperate need of a fresh start, as were the Wildcats. After failing to reach the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year, the individual who led Kentucky to seven Elite Eights, four Final Fours, and a national title in his initial decade came to a realization.
- This is not intended to diminish Calipari's past achievements at Kentucky. He revitalized the Cats, contributed to their national title, and kept UK in contention for a championship nearly every year during his remarkable first ten years. He served as a positive influence in the state, demonstrating his philanthropy in times of crisis. This is about recognizing that since 2020, Calipari was tarnishing this legacy. It's about acknowledging that both sides knew the journey had come to an end and it was time to step away. Just when it seemed that Calipari and Kentucky were considering another attempt, Arkansas intervened and rescued them from themselves.

What does Travis Perry think of new UK basketball coach Mark Pope?
kentucky.com/sports/college/kentucky-sports/uk-basketball-men/article287681095.html
Quick Glance: Enthusiastic Kentucky Fans Welcome Mark Pope as New Wildcats Coach at Rupp Arena
- Mark Pope's debut game as Kentucky's coach is still over six months away. However, the manner in which fans packed Rupp Arena for his unveiling as UK's new men's basketball coach would surprise those unfamiliar with the sport's calendar, considering the 2024-25 season doesn't commence until November.
- Rupp Arena accommodates 20,500 spectators. The lower section of the venue features 10,000 theater-style seats, all of which were occupied. The upper section, with an additional 10,500 seats, took longer to fill, but by the time Pope was formally introduced at 4:54 p.m. on Sunday, not a single seat was vacant.
- All of this to greet back a beloved figure.
- "We witness these introductory press conferences frequently," Pope remarked. "No individual worldwide has ever witnessed a spectacle like this."

Los Angeles Dodgers Star Shohei Ohtani's Former Interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, Charged With Stealing $16 Million In Gambling Scandal
laist.com/news/los-angeles-dodgers-star-shohei-ohtanis-former-interpreter-ippei-mizuhara-charged-with-stealing-16-million-in-gambling-scandal
Quick Glance: Ippei Mizuhara Remains Free Despite Bank Fraud Charges on $25,000 Bond
- Former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani from the Los Angeles Dodgers surrendered to authorities and later appeared before the U.S. District Court.
- Ippei Mizuhara turned himself in on Friday and was subsequently released on an unsecured $25,000 bond, commonly referred to as a signature bond. This arrangement allowed Mizuhara to secure his release without needing to provide any cash or collateral.
- United States Magistrate Judge Maria A. Audero also stipulated that Mizuhara must undergo treatment for his gambling addiction related to the sports betting scandal. Prosecutors alleged that he exploited his personal and professional connection with Ohtani to steal over $16 million from the player's bank account by occasionally posing as Ohtani to bankers to cover his gambling expenses.
- On Friday, Mizuhara only responded to the judge's inquiries by answering 'yes' when Audero asked him if he comprehended various aspects of the case and his bond conditions.

Jrue Holiday signs contract extension with Celtics through 2028, per reports: Jrue Holiday signs contract extension with the Celtics through 2028, per reports
bostonherald.com/2024/04/10/jrue-holiday-signs-contract-extension-with-celtics-through-2028-per-reports/
Quick Glance: Celtics Extend Contract with Jrue Holiday for $135 Million over 4 Years: Sources
- The Celtics reached an agreement on Wednesday with guard Jrue Holiday for a four-year, $135 million contract extension, as confirmed by league sources. The news of the deal was initially reported by ESPN. Holiday was part of the trade last offseason where the Bucks traded him to the Celtics in exchange for players and two first-round picks. Prior to that, the Blazers acquired Holiday in a three-team deal involving player exchanges. Holiday, aged 33, boasts a two-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA All-Defensive First Team accolades. He clinched an NBA championship with the Bucks in 2021. Throughout the 2023-24 season, Holiday is averaging 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game.
- Once again, the Celtics successfully negotiated a significant offseason addition into accepting a reduction in salary for an extension. Al Horford agreed to a two-year, $60 million extension following his trade to Boston in the summer, and now Holiday will forego his $37.4 million player option to kickstart an extension beginning at approximately $30 million annually. This extension provides Holiday with security well into his late 30s, while also retaining a player option post the potential salary spike from the next TV deal. Holiday promptly assumed the role of the team's defensive leader upon arriving in Boston. His adaptability and leadership in coordinating the team's defensive schemes contributed to Boston achieving the league's second-best defensive rating.
