'A truly remarkable man' - President pays tribute to Bird
Quick Glance: Charlie Bird reported on major stories in 40-year career
  • One of Ireland's best-known journalists, Charlie Bird, has passed away at the age of 74 after a public battle with motor neurone disease.

  • During his 40-year career at RTÉ, Bird reported on some of the biggest stories in Ireland and internationally, including the Stardust fire, the National Irish Bank tax avoidance scandal, the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the US, and the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami.

  • He also became the Provisional IRA’s sole media contact and was often the first to break the news of the many twists and turns in the Northern Ireland peace process.

  • After being diagnosed with motor neurone disease in October 2021, Bird documented his physical decline and fear of facing death through various media platforms and his 'Climb with Charlie' campaign on Croagh Patrick.

  • The UAE is cautiously optimistic about COP28 committing to phase down fossil fuels in the coming decades.

  • Hosting a climate conference in a petrostate could lead to real progress on climate despite the irony.

  • A pledge now will not mean the world will completely stop using fossil fuels.

  • It is very unlikely to get any commitment on an expiry date, as it would be too controversial.
